Canadian Rod Cameron had been around Hollywood for several years,a contract-player for Paramount and Universal, and had starred in two of Republic's best, action-packed serials–-1943's "G-Men vs. The Black Dragon" and "Secret Service in Darkest Africa"–-both of which he played a character named Rex Bennett, in the rare instance of Republic duplicating a hero character in one of their serials (aside from The Lone Ranger and variations of the Zorro character.) Universal, following the voluntary departure of Tex Ritter from their series-westerns–-a mistake Ritter often said he regretted–-then signed Rod Cameron to take overthe star of their B-western unit. Cameron starred in six films before he was elevated to bigger-budgeted and non-series films at Universal and, later, much grittier and more-acclaimed westerns at Republic and Allied Artists.

The first in the B-series, "Boss of Boomtown", was a western version of the "Quirt and Flagg" feuding-buddies-in-the-army films, with Steve Hazard (Rod Cameron) and Jim Ward (Tom Tyler)as Civil War cavalry sergeants constantly battling over girls, horses or anything that came up that had more than one side to it. On the day before their enlistment is up, a stagecoach is held up and robbed of the mine payroll. Among the passengers are Norman Brett (Robert Barron), Dale Starr (Vivian Austin) and Blain Cornwall (Sam Flint.) MIss Star has inherited the Emporium gambling palace from an uncle; Brett is a prominent mine owner, and Cornwall ostensibly is an assayer, but is, in reality a Treasury Departmen agent. Later, Jim, Steve and their pal "Chatter" Bob (Fuzzy Knight) get into trouble, Steve talks Jim in re-enlisting, but fails to do so himself, does "Chatter." "Boss of Boomtown" was the first of six compact 60 minute westerns from Universal starring Rod Cameron filmed for the 1944-45 season. Cameron was teamed with Tom Tyler in this one.

Cameron plays Steve Hazard and Tyler Jim Ward, two brawling cavalry sergeants with Fuzzy Knight along for comedy reliefChatter-Box. The story concerns a series of hold-ups of local miner's gold ore and army payrolls by an unknown gang.

Treasury agent Cornwall (Sam Flint) enlists the help of Steve and Chatter-Box to infiltrate the gang and bring those behind the robberies (Jack Ingram, Robert Barron and Dick Alexander) to justice. Meanwhile Steve has tricked Jim into re-enlisting in the cavalry after their enlistment was up.

Both Steve and Jim have an eye on saloon owner Dale Starr (Vivian Austin) while mail order bride Minerva Sawyer (Marie Austin) has her sights set on Chatter-Box.

Universal's superior production values and the steady hand of veteran Director Ray Taylor gives us a compact little westerngoodmany of the higher budgeted westerns of the day.

As I mentioned earlier, Cameron and Tyler played well off each other. Both were accomplished action stars. Cameron had just done two serials for Republic and Tyler one at Columbia. But unfortunately, Tyler was replaced by Eddie Dew for the balance of the series. Tyler's health had begun to fail around this time and he was forced to take two years off from films. Cameron on the other hand was poised to move up to "A" list features following this series.
